Reflections of Life
Deacon Alvin Lee Neloms
Enlistment: March 9, 1949 | Honorable Discharge: December 23, 2020
Alvin Lee Neloms was born on March 9, 1949, to Arthur McDaniel and Lena Mae Neloms in Denmark. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife, Carlee Weatherspoon Neloms; stepson, Calvin Evans; and grandmother, Gussie M. Solomon.
A lifelong resident of Madison, Florida, Alvin attended the Madison County school system and graduated from Madison County Training School in 1967. Two years later, he enlisted in the United States Army on September 29, 1969. During his enlistment, he served and fought in the Vietnam War – a war that lasted from 1955 to 1975, of which he bravely fought for six years. After his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged as an Army Specialist (SP-4) rank at Ft. Lewis, Tacoma, Washington, on May 16, 1976.
Having returned to civilian life after a long and gruesome war, Alvin obtained additional education at North Florida Junior College, earning a certificate as an automotive technician. He was gainfully employed at Cantey Chevrolet Dealership until its closure. He later found work with Dixie Packers, the Street Department for the City of Madison, and finally as a heavy equipment operator for Madison County Road Department.
During his free time, Alvin could be found fishing or hunting – he was a true outdoorsman. He would spend hours near his favorite lake or pond or surveying the landscape from his deer stand. While the objective was to catch or shoot his next meal, he relished in the tranquility of God's creation and found peace in the open air. After fishing or hunting all day, Alvin would take to the kitchen to showcase his culinary skill. He enjoyed cooking his catch as well as experimenting with specialty items.
A moral and honest man of faith, Alvin accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized into the Christian faith through membership with Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church. Because of his commitment to God and the church, he was honored by his congregation to be chosen to serve in leadership and ordained to the ministry of deacons in 1986.
Known throughout Madison's city for his smile and kind demeanor, Alvin was a wonderful human being. Devoted to his family, and especially his wife, he will forever be celebrated as a doting grandfather, brother, uncle, deacon of the church, and friend. Mournfully, Deacon Alvin Lee Neloms' expiration of service (ETS) concluded on December 23, 2020. He exchanged his battle clothes for a robe of glory and entered into eternal rest.
Deacon Alvin Lee Neloms leaves to cherish his precious memories: three grandchildren; brother, Alexander (Frances) Washington, Jr.; sisters, Edith Washington (Roosevelt) Nelson and Deloris Washington; brothers-in-law, Collie Lee Weatherspoon, Howard Askiens, and David Weatherspoon; sisters-in-law, Marie Akiens, Marry Fiffia, Gail (Garnell) Daniel, Annie Irvine, and Abalina Earuel; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and loving friends.
