In Loving Memory of Barbara Jean McQuay Hires
June 18, 1962 – January 16, 2025
Barbara Jean McQuay Hires, affectionately known to all as "Bobby," was born on June 18, 1962, in Madison, Florida, to David McQuay and Clara Hill McQuay. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. On Thursday, January 16, 2025, Barbara peacefully transitioned from this life, entering into the embrace of her eternal home.
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." – Psalm 23:1
Barbara's life was a testament to love, strength, and faith. She spent many years working at Dixie Packers, where she was known for her hard work and dedication. But Barbara's true joy came from the simple pleasures in life. She was a passionate fan of old-school westerns, finding comfort in the stories of heroes and adventure. Her love for the TV show Law & Order reflected her strong sense of justice and her desire for order in the world. She also cherished the quiet moments spent fishing, the gentle rhythm of nature that always calmed her spirit.
Throughout her life, Barbara's faith in God was unwavering. She worshiped and served her Lord faithfully at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Madison, where she found strength and solace in her community. It was there that her love for God grew deeper and more profound. Barbara knew that, "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters," as the 23rd Psalm says, and she trusted Him to lead her in all things.
Barbara's love for her family was immeasurable. She was a devoted mother to her three sons: Howard (Meka), Antonio, and Robert; daughter: Victoria (Brian); and a doting grandmother to: La'Shawana, Hazel, Remell, and Azeria. She found immense joy in their laughter, their milestones, and their company. Her siblings: David, Joseph (Paula), Leroy, Shirley, and Lottie (Stacey)—were her companions in life, and she carried them in her heart always. Barbara was also blessed to have many godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, each of whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." – Psalm 23:4
Barbara's generosity of spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She had a kind and giving heart, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her infectious laughter, her warmth, and her spirit of kindness left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She had a special fondness for Pepsi, and anyone who shared a cold can with her knew that it was just another way Barbara enjoyed the little things in life.
While Barbara's passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of her family and friends, they take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with those who have gone before her. She joins her parents, David and Clara McQuay, as well as her beloved sisters: Wanda, Gwendolyn, and Bessie Lee McQuay. Together, they await the joyful reunion in the presence of God, where there is no more sorrow, pain, or tears.
"He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." – Psalm 23:3
Barbara's life was a life well-lived—a life filled with faith, love, and devotion. Her memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her. Her legacy will continue in the lives of her children, grandchildren, siblings, and all who were touched by her kindness. She leaves behind a family who will hold her close in their hearts, cherishing the lessons she taught them, the love she gave, and the strength she instilled in them.
As Barbara begins her new chapter in eternity, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, resting in the presence of the Lord she so faithfully served. They hold onto the promise that, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." – Psalm 23:6
A chapter has ended. A page has turned. Barbara's life was well lived, and her rest is well earned.
