Obituary

Dr. Constantine “Connie” Hicks-Evans

A Life of Faith, A Legacy of Service, A Voice for Generations

“Some lives are measured in years, while others are measured by the lives they touch, the doors they open, and the difference they leave behind.”

The Tallahassee community pauses with profound gratitude and heartfelt reverence to honor the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Dr. Constantine “Connie” Hicks-Evans, a distinguished educator, devoted community servant, courageous advocate for equality, and woman of unwavering faith whose influence reached far beyond the boundaries of her beloved community.

A native of Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Hicks-Evans dedicated her life's work to the belief that education could transform lives, that justice should be accessible to all, and that meaningful service to others was among life's highest callings. Through her work with the Florida Department of Education and Leon County Schools, she championed educational opportunities, encouraged achievement, and helped create pathways toward brighter futures.

Yet, her contributions extended well beyond the classroom. As a respected leader within the NAACP and a steadfast advocate for civil rights, Dr. Hicks-Evans understood that progress required more than words. It demanded courage, conviction, perseverance, and a willingness to stand for what was right, even when the journey was difficult.

Alongside her beloved husband, the late Charles L. Evans Sr., she helped shape a legacy of leadership, service, and social progress in Tallahassee. Together, they demonstrated that a life committed to uplifting others could leave an imprint upon an entire community. Following his passing, she continued their shared commitment to justice, historical preservation, and the recognition of those whose sacrifices helped pave the way for future generations.

A faithful member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Dr. Hicks-Evans lived her faith through action. Her devotion to God was reflected not merely in what she professed, but in how she loved, encouraged, served, and advocated for her neighbors. She understood that true greatness is not found in titles or recognition, but in the willingness to make life better for someone else.

Beyond her many accomplishments, she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cherished friend, and guiding presence whose wisdom, strength, and compassion enriched countless lives.

Though her earthly voice has grown silent, the influence of Dr. Connie Hicks-Evans will continue to speak through the students she inspired, the families she encouraged, the causes she championed, the community she strengthened, and the generations who will benefit from her tireless labor.

Her life reminds us that one person, guided by faith and fueled by purpose, can help change the course of a community's history.

Today, we do not simply mourn the passing of a remarkable woman. We celebrate a life beautifully invested in the service of God and humanity. We give thanks for the example she set, the barriers she helped overcome, and the extraordinary legacy she leaves for others to carry forward.

May her family find comfort in knowing that her labor was not in vain, her influence will not be forgotten, and her legacy will continue to flourish in the hearts and lives of those she touched.

A life of purpose. A heart for people. A legacy that will live on.

Rest well, Dr. Connie Hicks-Evans. Your work on earth has made an everlasting difference.
