Sister Eunice Smith Alexander
MAY 19, 1943 – JULY 26, 2024
"Father, I stretch my hands to Thee, no other help I know...."
Sister Eunice Smith Alexander, the oldest of three children who blessed the lives of L.C. Smith and Viola Mitchell Smith, was born on May 19, 1943, in Monticello, Florida. However, her parents allowed Eunice to be reared by her Uncle Robert and "Aunt Sugar" Tookes. (This was a customary practice for Black families during that time.) They lived in the Hansen Community of Madison County, Florida. She remained a lifelong resident of the area.
Eunice loved the Lord and had a strong spiritual foundation. From the time that she accepted him as her Savior, she looked forward to serving Him in praise and worship.
Educated in the public schools of Madison County, Eunice completed her formal education at Madison County Training School. From that educational experience, she began her career in housekeeping, both in the private sector as well as the hotel industry. She loved to work and took pride in doing an excellent job.
Weekends were the times Eunice could spend hours browsing through useful and unique finds at yard sales. She also loved to shop at her favorite stores for special outfits which made her look and feel well-dressed. When she was physically able, Eunice enjoyed cooking, planting flowers, and decorating. Mostly, she loved being a part of family gatherings.
Eunice Smith Alexander was the last of the past two generations in the family to cross from earthly time to live forever more. "When He calls me, I will answer." The Lord whispered her name, and transitioning to her eternal Home on Friday, July 26, 2024, was her answer.
The memory of Eunice Smith Alexander will remain in the hearts of all who knew her, believing that earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Loved ones who will keep her memory alive are her sons: Nathaniel (Vanessa) Alexander of Jennings, FL and William (Carolyn) Alexander of Quitman, GA; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; special friend: Mary Brinson Hargett; along with other sorrowing relatives and loving friends. Loved ones who preceded Eunice in death were her parents, L.C. and Viola Smith; uncle and aunt: Robert and Sugar Tookes; daughter: Janice Alexander; brother: Clarence Smith; and sister: Viola Smith.
