Hattie Lee Hollingsworth
08/18/1928 – 11/16/2025
“To everything there is a season, and a time and purpose under the heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to pluck up that which is planted” Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
Hattie Lee Hollingsworth was born in Tallahassee, Florida, on August 18, 1928, to Joe Bruce and Lauvinia Bruce. She was the only child of their union and received her early education through the local school district in Leon County.
Hattie spent the majority of her life in Tallahassee, Florida, with the exception of a brief period in Vallejo, California while accompanying her husband during his military deployment. Her professional journey began on April 4, 1949, when she joined the State Attorney General’s Office as a mail clerk. Throughout her tenure, she served diligently and exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, working under six different Attorney Generals. After forty-three years of dedicated service, Hattie retired from her position on May 29, 1992.
“Who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies.” (Proverb 31: 10)
Hattie Hollingsworth was steadfast in her faith, having devoted her life to Christ from an early age. Her spiritual journey was deeply rooted at Philadelphia Primitive Baptist Church, where she worshiped for over forty years under the leadership of Elder Dr. Moses General Miles. After his retirement, Sister Hollingsworth remained committed to the church, willingly serving in any role she was called upon to fulfill.
Even as her health began to decline, she continued to participate in church services whenever she was physically able. The church community showed consistent care and support toward her, ensuring she remained connected. If she could not attend church functions, members would bring her food or gifts, letting her know she was remembered and valued.
Throughout her illness, she could always rely on Sis. Jackie Pemberton, who called daily to check on her wellbeing and to keep her informed about church activities and special events. Sis. Jackie also made sure she stayed engaged by informing her about television programs she might enjoy or find meaningful, further strengthening their bond and the sense of community within the church.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me that day; and not to me only, but to all of them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
On November 16, 2025, after living a full life and bravely fighting a good fight, God reached out and called our beloved Hattie Hollingsworth home. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Hattie leaves behind a loving family who will carry her memory forward. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria McClain of Jacksonville, Florida; Sterling D. Hollingsworth of Tallahassee, Florida, a devoted grandson and caretaker; and Bryan McClain of Jacksonville, Florida, a grandson who will deeply miss her enthusiasm for fishing and sports.
Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, the “apples of her eye,” Kiersten A. Hollingsworth and Sterling D. Hollingsworth II, both of Tallahassee, Florida. Also, Deandre Hartley of San Antonio, Texas and Bryan McClain, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida. Hattie is also remembered by her two siblings, Coretta Bruce and Mary Balcom, both of Tallahassee, Florida.
Special recognition is extended to Hattie’s nieces, Debbie Bruce and Joan Elaine Kilpatrick, as well as her nephew, Ryan Bruce. Their unwavering support and presence have been a source of comfort to the family throughout the years. We also acknowledge other nieces and nephews who share this loss and hold dear the memories of their aunt.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Anitra Highland-Simmonds for her countless acts of love and selflessness throughout the years. Her thoughtful care and dedication during the years was truly appreciated and has left a lasting impact.
