Obituary

Born on July 25, 1940, in Madison, Florida, Margaret was the beloved daughter of the late Luereather Akins and Willie C. Woods. She was raised in Madison County, where she received her education through the Madison County Public School System. From an early age, she embodied the values of hard work, respect, integrity, and compassion—qualities that would define her life and legacy.

Affectionately known as “Mot,” Margaret possessed a warm and welcoming spirit that endeared her to everyone she met. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making others feel valued, appreciated, and loved. Whether offering a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand, she was always willing to serve those around her.

Margaret was united in holy matrimony to the late Lawson Sutton, and together they shared many years of love, companionship, and cherished memories. Their union was built upon a foundation of commitment, family, and faith.

For more than thirty years, Margaret faithfully served in the healthcare profession at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She took tremendous pride in caring for others and was widely respected for her gentle spirit, dedication, and genuine concern for the well-being of those entrusted to her care. Her work reflected her servant’s heart and her lifelong commitment to helping others.

Family was the center of Margaret’s world. She found her greatest joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Her home was a place of love, laughter, wisdom, and encouragement. She was the family’s matriarch, a source of strength and guidance whose influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Surrounded by the love of her family and the precious memories she helped create, Margaret departed this earthly life and entered into eternal peace. Though her physical presence will be greatly missed, the lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the legacy she leaves behind will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Margaret “Mot” Hills Sutton peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the age of 85. Her life was a testament to faith, love, service, and unwavering devotion to her family.

“Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.”

Cherishing her precious memories are her loving daughters, Joann Hills and Lora Hills; her beloved bonus children, Clifstonia Butler and Clifford Hills; her cherished grandchildren, Deidre Reed, Arfayvan Hills, Antione Hills, Tionna Hills, Emmanuel Adeoye, Nehemiah Hills, and D’Angelo Hills; along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, special caretaker: Nancy Metacarpa; godson: Kenney (Eloise) Penny; god-daughter: Cynthia Bennett; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and presence.

She shared a special bond with her special nieces, Tabitha Williams and Dana Alexander, whom she loved dearly and held close to her heart.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Luereather Akins and Willie C. Woods; her beloved husband, Lawson Sutton; her son, James Hills, Sr.; and her grandsons, James Hills, Jr. and Gary Hills.

Though she has gone from our sight, she will never be gone from our hearts. Her legacy of faith, kindness, resilience, and unconditional love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
