Obituary

"Savior, Savior
Hear my humble cry
While on others Thou art calling
Do not pass me by"

Maxine Louise Lewis was the precious baby girl born to Hood Lewis and Marie Smith Lewis on July 31, 1949, in Madison, FL. She was dearly loved and welcomed into the family by her siblings. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; husband: George West, Jr.; sisters: Earnestine Boatman, Ellen Singletary, and Christine Bailey; and brother: Willie Lewis.

Maxine grew up on the Fraleigh farm where farm work involved all family members. Summer vacations began with their gathering tobacco and ended with their picking cotton but also doing many other farm chores in between. The rigor of this work experience prepared Maxine with a work ethic for her career employment. She worked many years at Gold Kist poultry plant as well as Madison County Memorial Hospital before she retired.

Maxine's education began at Lime Sink (Elementary School), one of the many two-room schools for black children in the Madison County School District. She was a student at this school first through sixth grade before transferring to Madison County Training School for her secondary education. Maxine later chose to join Job Corps in Newark, NJ to complete her requirements for her diploma and to earn her Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification before she returned to Madison to settle down.

Having accepted Christ as her Redeemer early in life, Maxine joined Greater New Zion Community Church where she joyfully served the Lord and learned to put her faith in action. She enjoyed singing in the choir and assisting in any other area she was needed. Her love for the Lord was also the love she had for others. She treated everyone with courtesy and respect and expected the same courtesy to be given to her.

Maxine and George West, Jr. were married for nearly 30 years. Together they raised their children and many of their children's friends because she loved children, regardless of whose they were. She welcomed them into their home, and they could always stay there a night or two and many times, even longer. Maxine was regarded as a "neighborhood mom or a community mom". Parents knew their children were safe with her.

Family gatherings created special memories of all the food, fellowship, and fun they always shared. Maxine loved to dance and was expected to do so with her creative moves. She always amazed the younger generations with her talent.

On Wednesday, September 22, 2021, Maxine Louise Lewis West answered the Master's call. She moved from her earthly home to join the forever heavenly choir and to praise dance before the King of Kings.

Life's race well run; life's work well done.
