Mother Edith Wells Swilley
December 31, 1933 – February 15, 2024
"When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be…"

Mother Edith Wells Swilley was a New Year's Eve blessing for her parents, Jacob Wells, Sr. and Maude Davis Wells. Born December 31, 1933, during the early years of The Great Depression when the economy crashed around the world, their newest baby daughter was their ray of sunshine and hope. She grew up with her six sisters and three brothers in the Georgetown community of Madison, Florida, where she also remained a lifelong resident.

Mother Edith was another treasured link in rejoining the Wells family chain in their eternal home. Preceding her in death were both parents: Jacob and Maude Wells, Sr.; daughter: Ethelle Owens; brothers: Jacob Wells, Jr. and Wallace Stacey; sisters: Lizzie Mae Marshall, Sallie Mae Graham, Verlee Wells, Doris Simpson, Dorothy Wells, and Inez Wells Robinson; and recently a grandson: William McGee, Jr.

Earlier in life, Mother Edith professed her belief that Jesus was her Redeemer. She was baptized and joined Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church of Madison. As she grew stronger in faith, she learned to selflessly put others ahead of herself and to give her service to the Lord in a more excellent way.

Mother Edith was a stay-at-home wife and mother. She enjoyed taking care of her household and family. She cherished the time she spent preparing favorite meals for them and for whoever dropped in. However, during her golden years, she looked forward to teaming up with other senior citizens.

Because of her faith, Mother Edith Wells Swilley knew that there would be an appointed time when the Lord would call her name to enter the glories of Paradise. With this awareness, she held on to God's unchanging hand, and on Thursday, February 15, 2024, in the twinkling of an eye, she transitioned from her earthly labor to receive her heavenly reward.

Mother Edith Wells Swilley left a profound impression and her love for all. Celebrating her life and precious memories are her devoted husband of 65 years: Tommie Lee Swilley of Madison, FL; loving son: Edwin (Carlene) Swilley of Madison, FL; daughter: Frances Ransom of Madison, FL; brother: Willie (Kathy) Wells of Lockport, IL; grandchildren: Tommy Owens, Tony Owens, Kecia Owens, and Frances Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren; along with countless other sorrowing relatives and comforting friends.
