Obituary

Mr. Rosevelt Nelson, Sr.
"Bobby Lee"
1951 – 2022
"The battle is fought, and the victory is won!"

A jubilant day for Bob Nelson and Daisy Dopson Nelson occurred on August 23, 1951, when they welcomed their son Rosevelt Nelson, Sr. into their lives. Affectionately called "Bobby Lee", Rosevelt was known for his cheerfulness but most of all, his trademark smile. He was a lifelong resident of the Madison County community. His parents; siblings: Robert Nelson, Jr., and Retha M. Mickles; and granddaughter: McKenzie Chloe Ann Nelson, all preceded him in death.

Rosevelt was appreciated for his kind and generous spirit and love for his family. He was a hard worker who was also lovingly protective and supportive. He learned how to do so early in life when he had the task of raising his siblings. This gave him parenting experience he and his wife needed in raising their children. His "family first" rule generated many loving memories for everyone, especially his love of storytelling. Whether in conversation, storytelling or even talking about the size of the fish that got away, Bobby Lee's favorite expression was "You know I ain't lying!"
Rosevelt accepted Christ as his personal Savior early in life. As he grew in faith, he also became faithful in his service to the Lord. He enjoyed fulfilling his responsibilities at Architillery Missionary Baptist Church. Whatever the task, he did not have to be reminded and was committed to doing his best. He taught these qualities to his children by his words as well as his example.
After graduating from Melbourne High School, Rosevelt served his country honorably by enlisting in the U.S. Army for six years. He continued that same level of commitment and dedication there as he later did during his employment with the City of Madison Sanitation Department.
Bobby Lee considered farming but settled on planting a large vegetable garden. Because he was blessed with a "green thumb", he always grew more than enough for his family, so he shared with other neighbors in the community.
Having learned earlier in life and reinforced in the military the importance of landmarks, he continued to use this system for giving directions as well as for traveling. He preferred the challenge of mentally mapping out routes rather than using GPS navigation; his method was always on point.
Rosevelt's legacy of love, goodwill, strength, faith, and most of all, family will reign forever. God called him from labor to reward, as he was peacefully ushered into the presence of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.
Rosevelt's living was not in vain. His affection and kindness will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who cherish his memory. Among them are his loving and devoted wife of 45 years: Edith Washington Nelson; sons: Rosevelt Nelson, Jr. of Madison, FL and Joseph (Adreaunna) Nelson of Monticello, FL; daughter: Alfreda (Tobias) Edwards of Valdosta, GA; brothers: Robert (Mattie) Nelson, Eddie Lee (Loretta Dixon) Nelson, and Nathaniel Nelson, all of Palm Bay, FL, Alexis (Lillie) Nelson of Orlando, FL; sisters: Sandra L. Nelson of Melbourne, FL; Effie R. Nelson of Palm Bay, FL, and Debbie Nelson of Anaheim, CA; cousin raised as a sister: Delois Cason of Eatonville, FL; seven grandchildren; brothers-in-law: Alexander Washington of Lake City, FL and William (Carol) Gaines of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law: Deloris Washington of Madison, FL; as well as a host of other loving relatives and sorrowing friends.
