IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wiley Cal
Smith, Jr.
January 27, 1960 – May 27, 2021
Oh, when I come to the end of my journey,
Weary of life and the battle is won;
Carrying the staff and the cross of redemption,
He'll understand and say, "Well done."
Wiley Cal Smith, Jr., affectionately known as "Butchie", was born in Pineville, Kentucky on January 27, 1960, to Wiley Cal Smith, Sr. and Clestaner Boothe. He spent his childhood there until the family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida during his early teen years. Both parents, as well as siblings: Henry Beard, Henry Smith, Margaret Boothe, and mother-in-law: Margaret Clayton Day, all preceded him in death.
It was in Jacksonville that Butchie met and then in 1988, married the love of his life, Wonza Denise Day. Together they raised their children to live by the Golden Rule, to always strive for excellence, and to make each day count.
Wiley was quiet-natured but that was not to be confused with his strong presence and commitment to giving his best effort in everything he attempted. He was a product of the Duval County School System that prepared him with life skills and a work ethic he needed to embrace his career, as well as other areas of his life. He was employed for more than 15 years as a heavy equipment operator with the Department of Water and Sewer for the City of Jacksonville and later as a long- distance trucker for Hansen Akins Company.
His enjoyed spending his time away from the job with his family. Although he was an avid chess player, he also used this time perfecting his skills of the game by welcoming them and others as challengers.
Wiley was an active member of Central Baptist Institutional Church. He was a hard worker who dedicated his time and talents in the service of the Lord to willingly and enthusiastically be a part of the Transportation and Usher Ministries.
Wiley Cal Smith, Jr. fulfilled his promise to serve the Lord with gladness and relocated to his heavenly home where he can serve Him eternally. He transitioned from this earthly life on Thursday, May 27, 2021. "I am at peace. My soul is at rest. There is no need for tears; for your love I was so blessed for all those years".
Forever treasuring the love, life and legacy of his life journey are his loving wife of 36 years: Wonza Denise Day Smith of Jacksonville, FL; daughters: La'tricia (Troy) Baker, Evelyn (Dontae) Greene, Tiffany (Devane) Sumter, all of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren: Ladarius, Jaron, Camora, Breyana, Tiani, Jael, Akeem, Jamie, Skye, and Rylee; sisters: Helen (Omerest) Allen, Leslie (David) Lucas, Willie Mae (Johnnie) Field, Mabelene Smith, all of Jacksonville, FL; brother: David (Mary) Boothe of Jacksonville, FL; father-in-law: James (Yvonne) Day of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law: Weisha (Marc) Killette, of Jacksonville, FL; many other loving relatives and sorrowing friends.
